These replaced the 1/2d, 1d, 1½d, 2d
line-engraved
low values printed by Perkins, Bacon & Co for nearly 40 years,
in addition there was a new 5d value for correspondence with India and China.
These were surface-printed by the printers De La Rue.

The 1d, is the only one to have corner letters, and was
replaced by the Penny lilac in July
1881
and the rest by the 'Lilac and
Greens' of 1883, which had corner letters.
