Two sheets of paper (or an envelope) required double postage,
if the letter weighed one ounce postage was quadrupled.

Penny Black introduced on 6th May 1840

Registration was introduced in Jan 1841 (1s), reduced to 6d in Mar 1848,
reduced to 4d in London in Aug 1862 and for the rest of the country in Jan 1863.

April 1st 1865

Oct 1871

A newspaper and postcard rate of ½d was introduced in Oct 1870
A new 1½d stamp was issued for the 2 ounce rate.

GB enters Universal Postal Union in July 1875

Charges for all European countries in the union and the USA

A new 2½d stamp was issued to coincide with the new continental letter rate
