Imprimatur from plate 58, 9 May 1845![]() Plate 58 (die I) For a closer look at die I click here By official regulations, whenever a plate was laid down, an impression on the same watermarked paper and in the selected colour to be used for the issued stamp was submitted to Somerset House for approval. This sheet, when approved and placed in the archives, was known as the imprimatur sheet. Some stamps have been removed from the sheets and end up in collections. It shows part of the selvage marking "of 12. £1.....Per S" the full inscription reads: PRICE 1d. Per Label. 1/- Per Row of 12. £1... Per Sheet. Place the Labels ABOVE the Address and towards the RIGHT HAND SIDE of the Letter.
