Most carried travel guide by tourists in Florence
My wife and I recently returned from a two week visit to Rome, Florence and
Venice. We used the corresponding Eyewitness Travel Guide for each of the three
cities. What I liked about all three guidebooks are its 3-D maps, good
overviews of the museums and excellent descriptions of all the sites in the
three cities, both major and minor ones. What was very helpful was to read a
paragraph or two about a sight when we came upon it, whether deliberately or by
just exploring. For the Florence book, the 3D cutaway of the Duomo is great.
Also, excellently presented are the overviews of the Uffizi, the Bargello,
Piazza della Signoria and Pallazzo Vecchio. The book begins with an excellent
short history of the region and the Medici family. I found this description far
superior to the one in the Knopf series. The book's weakness is its short and
insufficient list of hotels. For hotel listings I suggest the Frommer series.
Finally, an unofficial survey by observation, it seemed that more tourists were
carrying the Eyewitness Travel Guides (in many different languages) than any
other tour guide.

| The Art of Florence by Glenn Andres, John Hunisak, Richard
Turner, Takashi Okamura (Photographer) Hardcover - 1348 pages (July 1999)
Artabras; Amazon
Outstanding in text and picture quality This magnificent two
volume book is a rare combination of outstanding substantive scholarship and
state of the art photography. If you are looking for a light-weight
book--physically or intellectually--this is not the book for you. Rather, the
book provides a comprehensive history of Florence, both art history and
political history, by noted scholars. The illustrations are lavish and compare
extremely favorably with other art books in our library that illustrate the art
treasures of Florence. Given the length of the book and the quality of the
illustrations, the price is reasonable. The book can be enjoyed by the armchair
traveler as well as by the tourist.

| Fodor's Exploring Florence & Tuscany (2nd Ed) by Tim Jepson
Paperback - 288 pages 2nd edition (March 1997) Fodors Travel Pubns; Amazon
A great guide for students studying
abroad in Tuscany. The outstanding pictures, art descriptions, and summaries
give a wonderful impression of Italy and Italians. The information is presented
in a concise and descriptive manner without the usual lengthy and often boring
paragraphs of Italian history. The maps were especially helpful and the
descriptions of Florence attractions led me to places I never would have
thought to visit. One of the best tourbooks of Florence and Tuscany that I have
seen. A must have for anyone spending a significant amount of time in Florence
or for anyone who wants to see the real Florence!

Tuscany by Giovanna Folonari Ruffino (Introduction), Michele Evans Hardcover -
188 pages 1 Us Ed edition (April 1999) Times Books; Amazon
Extremely easy, but extremely tasty!!! First hand
knowledge This September I went to Tuscany for a visit of the wine
country...among our tour of the country side, we were fortunate to tour
Giovanna's vineyard, take a cooking lesson from her and eat lunch for which she
prepared. Everything she served was not only delicious but extremely EASY
preparation. Few ingredients. Nothing too difficult. Look for her wine as well.
Awesome. She is probably one of the most energetic people I have ever met.
Unpresumptious and Beautiful. This will be the only Italian book I ever use.

wheat fields, and vineyards. Skim some more and you're exploring the rocky isle

Cannelle, an isolated stone tower by the sea from which lookouts used to scan
the waters for Barbary pirates. Covering everything from olive and grape
harvests to Carrara marble, the Apuan Alps, monasteries, sulfurous spas,
medieval cities, the cowboys of Maremma, and the artistic glories of Florence,
the tiny dream book also has a chapter of practicalities (with maps, directions
to these lovely places, and lodging options that range from villas and castles
to hermitages), providing the necessary details to allow your body to catch up
