Alexandria Troas
Alexandria Troas, Assos and Troy are all on the Northern Aegean coast of
Turkey between Çannakale and Izmir. See map.
It was a major sea port in NW Asia Minor and the
port to cross over to Neapolis in Macedonia for the land route to Rome.
Mentioned six times in the bible it is the place, on his second missionary
journey, where Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia standing and begging
him, "Come over to Macedonia and help us." Acts 16.9, which was the
first time that Paul preached the gospel in Europe (Philippi, Thessalonica,
Berea, Athens). It is also the start of the 'we' section in Acts 16:10 so it is
likely that Luke joined Paul at Alexandria Troas. It is also known as the place
where Eutychus fell down from the third storey as the apostle Paul preached on
and on until midnight (Acts 20:6 - 10) this was during Paul's third missionary
journey. See also the other biblical references to Troas in 2 Cor 2:12 and 2
Tim 4:13.
Assos (Behramkale )
After visiting Alexandria Troas Paul visited
Assos by foot (Acts 20:13). Aristotle, Plato's most famous student, was invited
to Assos and spent over three years living and teaching here. The acropolis of
Assos is 238 meters above sea-level, and the Temple of Athena was constructed
on this site in the 6th century B.C. Below lies a tiny and idyllic ancient
harbour. Assos has gained the reputation of being the center of the Turkish art
community with its lively, friendly and bohemian atmosphere. In 1989 it was
very peaceful.
(Acts 20:13-15 NIV) We went on ahead to the ship
and sailed for Assos, where we were going to take Paul aboard. He had made this
arrangement because he was going there on foot. {14} When he met us at Assos,
we took him aboard and went on to Mitylene. {15} The next day we set sail from
there and arrived off Kios. The day after that we crossed over to Samos, and on
the following day arrived at Miletus.
Chios
Paul joined the ship at Assos and sailed on to Mitylene and from
there to Kios (Chios) see Acts 20:14-15. From there they sailed to Miletus
where he sent for the elders of the church in Ephesus to say farewell to them
(Acts 20:17-38). Chios is a small Greek island a short ferry ride from the
Turkish city of Çesme (70 km from Izmir), you will notice a drastic
improvement in the architecture when you arrive in Chios.
